GST Collections Jump 8.1% to Rs 1.83 Lakh Crore in February; Revenue Crosses Rs 20 Lakh Crore
India collected Rs 1.83 lakh crore as Goods and Services Tax (GST) in February 2026. This is 8.1% higher compared to the same month last year, according to official data released on Sunday.
So far in the financial year 2025-26, up to February 28, the total GST collection has reached Rs 20.27 lakh crore. This is an 8.3% increase compared to the previous year.
During February, the government gave Rs 22,595 crore as GST refunds. This is 10.2% more than last year. After refunds, the net GST revenue for February was Rs 1.61 lakh crore.
The gross domestic GST revenue (from within India) was Rs 1.36 lakh crore, showing a 5.3% increase. The gross import revenue (GST collected on imported goods) was Rs 47,837 crore, which is a strong 17.2% rise compared to last year.
However, the net cess revenue was Rs 5,063 crore, which is lower than Rs 13,481 crore collected in February last year. After adjusting (settling) GST collections between the Centre and states, tax revenue trends were mixed across India.
Big industrial states, they did well and saw their GST income increase. Smaller or less industrialised states saw their GST income fall.
Maharashtra collected the highest GST before settlement, contributing Rs 10,286 crore. It was followed by Karnataka and Gujarat.
States where GST revenue increased after settlement include Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, among others.
States where GST revenue decreased after settlement include West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura and Jammu and Kashmir, among others.
An expert said, “the negative growth reported by major states such as Tamil Nadu (-6%), MP (-8%), Rajasthan (-1%), and the single-digit growth below the national average of 8% reported by WB (1%), Haryana (2%), UP (5%) and Maharashtra (6%) would be a matter of concern for the states and the policymakers.”
