The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is the chairperson of the GST Council. Whereas other state Finance Ministry and members of 28 states and three Union Territories will accompany Nirmala Sitharaman. Prime Minister declared this meeting in his Independence Day speech as a "Diwali gift" to launch various changes related to GST reforms, which aimed at simplifying the tax structure and reducing rates to ease the burden on citizens. This 56th GST Council Meeting is planned to be held on 3 and 4 September 2025 at New Delhi.

Importance of this Meeting:

The GST Council meetings are significant as they conclude on Rate rationalisation and structural changes, provide clarifications on GST law and compliance, IT system upgrades and taxpayer facilitation and Policy measures impacting both businesses and consumers. Media reports recommended that the GoM has permitted the Centre's decision to shift items in the 12% and 28% GST rates, which may be shifted to either the 5% or the 18% slabs. Final recommendation will be passed by the GST Council. The GST Council will decide whether to extend or end the collection and levy and distribution of compensation Cess to states. After March 2026 the GST Council may replace compensation Cess with health and clean energy Cess.
