Income Tax Department requires LEI for non-individuals with refunds over Rs.50 crore

In a recent announcement, the Income Tax Department added a new condition for non-individual entities to credit refunds exceeding Rs. 50 crore. According to the RBI notification, a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) number is now required for effective refund processing. Entities are encouraged to submit their LEI information as soon as possible via the right portal to ensure a smooth process.

The Income Tax Department, in compliance with the RBI Notification, has directed the use of the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) for non-individual entities. This requirement applies only to circumstances when the credit of refunds exceeds Rs. 50 crore.

The introduction of LEI is intended to streamline and expedite the refund processing procedure for qualifying firms. Entities in this category are advised to quickly provide their LEI information using the approved online platform.

The Department has outlined a simple submission process for LEI information. Entities can go to the Login section, then to the Dashboard, the Services tab, and then LEI to submit the necessary information.

Compliance with the new LEI requirement is critical for non-individual organisations seeking income tax refunds greater than Rs. 50 crore. The change is designed to improve openness, accuracy, and efficiency in the refund disbursement process.

Entities are encouraged to meet the deadline for submitting LEI details to avoid any delays in refund processing. Failure to meet the LEI requirement may result in penalties or delays in the refund disbursement process.

The Income Tax Department emphasises its commitment to ensuring a smooth and user-friendly refund process for all companies involved. The implementation of LEI is part of ongoing attempts to modernise and improve the efficiency of tax operations.

IT Department’s implementation of the required use of the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) for non-individual organisations with refunds over Rs. 50 crore demonstrates its commitment to a more streamlined and effective tax administration system. Entities are strongly encouraged to comply with the new criteria as soon as possible to ensure a smooth refund processing experience.
