With just a few days left before the July 31 deadline to file income tax returns (ITRs), many taxpayers are asking the same question: Will the government extend the deadline?
Every year, speculation about an extension increases as the deadline gets closer. This year, too, many taxpayers are hoping for more time. However, there is no official announcement about any extension so far. Experts advise taxpayers not to wait for an announcement that may not come.
No Official Confirmation Has Been Released Yet
As of now, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has not announced any extension of the July 31 deadline for filing ITRs.
Although there is a lot of discussion on social media about a possible extension, such decisions are generally taken only in special situations, such as major technical problems or other serious administrative issues. Since no extension has been announced, taxpayers should continue to follow the existing July 31 deadline.
Experts Say: Don’t Wait for Rumours
Tax experts have advised taxpayers not to depend on rumours or speculation about a possible extension. Instead, they should try to file their returns before July 31.
The Income Tax Department has already made the required filing utilities available and has also taken steps to improve its e-filing system. Unless the CBDT officially announces an extension, taxpayers should assume that the July 31 deadline will remain in place.
Waiting for an extension could also create problems
Failure to file by the due date may result in a late filing penalty under Section 234F, interest on any due taxes and delays in refunds. Hence, it is important to file the return on time to avoid any unnecessary financial and compliance-related issues.
The delay in filing can be another stressor, especially when taxpayers later find errors or missing information in their papers.
Early filing enables taxpayers to review the details in Form 26AS properly, Annual Information Statement (AIS and other key documents. If you find any mismatch or if something is missing, you can get it corrected before filing your ITR.
File On Time Unless An Extension is Officially Announced
Taxpayers should not rely on speculation or hope for an extension in making their filing decisions.
Historically, the government has only extended the ITR deadline in exceptional circumstances such as widespread technical glitches or major administrative issues. Taxpayers should expect the July 31 deadline to remain in place until there is an official announcement of an extension. If there is no announced extension, waiting till the last minute can leave you very little time to complete the filing process. You may also find it difficult to resolve any pending issues relating to Form 26AS, AIS or any other document.
Failure to meet the deadline also can result in a late fee of up to $5,000 depending on the taxpayer’s income and applicable interest on unpaid tax, and can delay processing of refunds.
Filing on time can help taxpayers avoid late fees and interest, speed up refund processing and protect important tax benefits, including the ability to carry forward eligible losses.
