Today marks a crucial deadline for taxpayers across the country, as July 31 is the last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2026–27.
Filing your ITR on time is not just a legal obligation but also helps when you apply for cards or visas. Tax experts also suggest that you check all your financial details carefully before filing your return, to prevent errors and penalties for late filing.
How to File Your ITR Online
Step 1: Login
Login to Income Tax e-filing portal using PAN as User id and password.
Step 2: Begin Filing
Then log into your account, and click on e-File, then Income Tax Returns. Choose File Income Tax Return.
Choose Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 for income earned during the financial year 2025-26. Choose Online filing and then Continue.
Step 3: Choose the Right ITR Form
Choose the form corresponding to your income source:
ITR-1: For individuals having income from salary and other sources.
ITR-2: For individuals having capital gains, foreign assets, or more than one house property.
ITR-3: For individuals having income from business or profession.
ITR-4: For taxpayers under presumptive taxation scheme .
Step 4: Choose the reason for filing
Select one of the following, e.g.:
You are above the basic exemption limit on income.
There are a few specific tax laws which make filing mandatory.
Any other reason as may be applicable.
Step 5: Confirm your details
Much of your information will have been pre-filled. Please check the following:
PAN, Bank Account and Aadhaar Information.
Income information. Salary etc.
Tax Deductions under 80C , 80D etc and other eligible sections .
Make sure everything is correct before moving ahead.
Step 6: File and Pay Tax Due, If Any
If you still have any tax to pay, complete the payment first. Finally, review your return and submit it.
Step 7: Track your return
E-verification should be done within 30 days from the date of filing your ITR to be considered complete.
