More than Rs.11.8 Trillion stuck in Direct Tax Dispute, FM informs Rajya Sabha The entire amount of tax income locked in litigation for direct taxes is Rs.11.83 trillion, with over 71,453 cases outstanding across the Supreme Court, High Courts, and tax tribunals as of December 31, 2024, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. As of January 31, 2025, there are 82,011 pending indirect tax cases, with a frozen revenue of Rs.5.76 trillion. According to official data, 6,730 direct tax cases are pending in the Supreme Court, totalling Rs25,708.2 crore in dispute. The High Courts have 41,548 direct tax cases, worth Rs 4.9 trillion in dispute. There are 23,175 direct tax cases before tribunals, with a total of Rs.6.7 trillion in dispute. The Supreme Court has 2,571 pending cases involving indirect taxes, totalling Rs 1.09 trillion in litigation. The High Courts are now examining 24,184 cases involving tax disputes totalling Rs 2.63 trillion. The majority of indirect tax cases—55,256 in total—are pending before the Customs, Excise, and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), totalling Rs 2.03 trillion.
