The Income Tax Department held an awareness programme in Ghatkopar on April 28, 2026, to explain the key features of the new Income Tax Act, 2025, which came into effect on April 1, 2026. The programme was part of a nationwide campaign to help people understand the new law.
The Department said these efforts show its commitment to making the tax system simpler, more transparent, and easier for taxpayers to follow.
More than 350 people attended the event, including taxpayers, chartered accountants, members of trade associations, and representatives from different business groups in Ghatkopar. Dr. Vikram Sahay, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, said that the new Act will benefit taxpayers by reducing compliance costs and making the law simpler and easier to understand. He added that the Act was prepared keeping taxpayers’ concerns in mind and will help them fulfil their responsibility of paying taxes for nation-building. He also shared that over 30 outreach programmes will be held across Mumbai in April and May, along with a Mega Outreach event on May 12, 2026.
Dr. Maya Maheshwari, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, gave the welcome address. She said that officials worked for the past two years to make the new Act simple and clear. Shri Manas Sahu, ACIT, gave a presentation explaining the main points of the new law.
Participants were also introduced to digital services for taxpayers. These included the AI-based "Kar Saathi" chatbot, the "Kar Setu" booklet with frequently asked questions about the new Act, and other materials like brochures and guidance notes.
During the two-hour session, attendees raised questions regarding tax payments and the filing of returns for the financial year 2026-27. Senior Income Tax officials addressed their concerns and provided detailed clarifications. The programme was highly appreciated by all those present.
Experts at the event said that the new Act brings more transparency and supports a technology-driven tax system.
