71-Year-Old Woman’s Aadhaar Misused

A 71-year-old woman from Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district has alleged that her Aadhaar and PAN card details were misused to obtain a fake GST registration. She claimed that the fraud was used to evade taxes worth Rs 2.53 crore, following which her bank account was frozen.
The woman, Lakshmi of Indira Nagar in Uthangarai, submitted a complaint at the Krishnagiri district Superintendent of Police’s office on Monday. She sought a detailed investigation and action against those responsible.
Lakshmi reportedly came to know about the issue when she visited her bank to withdraw money. The bank manager informed her that her account had been frozen by the Commercial Taxes Department.
On making inquiries, she was told that the action was based on an order issued by the Assistant Commissioner of the Ambur Commercial Taxes Assessment Circle. The department had stated that a private company registered in Lakshmi’s name had GST dues of Rs 2,53,23,676 for the 2018-19 financial year.
Lakshmi, however, said she had no connection with the company and had never run such a business. She alleged that unidentified persons had misused copies of her Aadhaar and PAN cards to fraudulently register the company in her name and evade taxes.
She further claimed that her son, Ramakrishnan, also had his bank account frozen in connection with the same GST dues. Ramakrishnan works as a daily wage labourer and has a savings account at another bank branch.
Lakshmi has urged the police to investigate the matter, identify those responsible and take legal action against them. She also requested that her and her son’s bank accounts be unfrozen.
