A national drive by Goods and Services Tax (GST) officials has found Rs.30,000 crore in tax evasion. According to reports, the evasion was carried out using stolen identities, including about 18,000 Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) and Aadhaar cards.

The GST officials initiated the operation on May 16, 2023, and have searched over 1,000 places across the country so far. In addition, seven people have been detained in connection with the investigation.

According to the GST officials, the accused exploited stolen identities to establish shell firms and fake GST registrations. They then exploited these corporations to avoid paying taxes by failing to file GST returns or claiming fake refunds.

GST officials have stated that they are currently investigating the situation and that further arrests are possible. They have also warned that individuals discovered to be engaging in tax avoidance will face harsh penalties.

The government has suffered a major setback as a result of the Rs.30,000 crore GST evasion. The GST was adopted in 2017 with the goal of simplifying and streamlining the tax system. However, the current evasion case has called into doubt the GST system’s efficacy.

The administration has said that it is determined to combat tax evasion. It has also announced a number of initiatives to strengthen the GST system, such as expanding the number of tax officials and making returns easier for taxpayers.
