Punjab Saw a Big Jump of 25.3% in GST Collections This May, Setting a New Record

Punjab has shown a big jump in net GST collection of 25.32% in the month of May. Finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated, the new GST collection has risen to Rs. 2,006.31 crore in May 2025, last year the record was Rs. 1,601.14 crore in May. This means an increase of 405.17 crore has been noticed this year. Last year, a growth of Rs. 121 crore (8.17%) was noticed in comparison to the year 2023, in which the net GST collection was recorded as Rs. 1,480 crore.

Cheema said the growth happened because of better tax management, more people following tax rules, and a strong economy under the AAP government. He added that this shows Punjab’s financial situation is improving faster.

He also said that this sharp increase is the biggest monthly growth compared to the same month in past years, and it’s higher than the average GST growth across the country. He further added, “We have curbed tax evasion, improved field-level enforcement, and enabled a seamless taxation framework that supports businesses while safeguarding state revenues.”

The ministers said, important actions involved the physical verification of 195 fake firms, which result in blocking of Rs. 75.79 crore in fake input tax credit (ITC) claim, coal sector was found to be the key region with major tax evasion cases, off book transactions crossing Rs. 225 crore and Rs. 11.65 crore in tax evasion. Fake gold bullion transactions in Ludhiana were discovered, of Rs. 900 crores, and blocking ineligible ITC of Rs. 21 crore.

Cheema admires the turning point, which was noticed when Punjab, a state at the border, was suffering from great tension while conflict between Pakistan and India was going on.
