ITR Status Shows “Processed” But No Refund? Here’s What You Should Do

The deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26 ended on September 16. The Income Tax Department did not give any more extensions, even though many taxpayers reported technical issues, delays in the release of utilities and other issues.

By the end of the deadline, the Income Tax Department’s website showed that over 7.53 crore ITRs were filed, and more than 4 crore returns were processed. After the deadline, about 15 lakh more ITRs were filed. As of September 5, the total number of filed returns stood at 7.68 crore, and around 6.11 crore of them were processed.

This year, the government extended the ITR filing deadline twice for non-audit taxpayers. The original deadline of July 31 was first extended to September 15, and then by only one day till September 16. For audit cases, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has kept the filing deadline as October 31. The deadline for submitting tax audit reports has also been extended to October 31.

Usually, there is at least a one-month gap between the tax audit report submission date and the ITR filing date for audit cases. This year, it is still unclear whether the government will extend the ITR filing deadline for such taxpayers.

But many taxpayers have complained on social media that even though their ITR status shows as “processed” on the e-filing portal, they have not yet received their tax refunds.

If ITR Status Shows “Processed” But The Refund Has Not Been Received

Many taxpayers worry when their ITR status shows as “Processed” but the refund is not yet credited. In such cases, they should consider the following steps:

1. Check Refund Status

Log in to the e-filing portal and view the Refund Status section.

2. Confirm Bank Details

Confirm your bank details, such as account number and IFSC code, because refunds often get delayed due to inaccurate or wrong details.

3. Check Form 26AS and TDS

Match the tax deducted as shown in Form 26AS with the amount specified in the ITR. Mismatches can cause delays.

4. Request Refund Reissue

If the details are correct but still the refund is not received, then request a refund reissue through the e-filing official portal’s helpdesk.

5. Contact NSDL or Bank

If a Refund Order (RFD) code has been shared but the money is not yet credited, then contact the relevant bank branch or NSDL. Sometimes, refunds take 15 to 30 days to reach the bank account after processing.

ITR filing For Non-Audit Taxpayers

  • Non-audit taxpayers usually file ITRs based on income from salary, bank interest, or other regular incomes.
  • They fill in their income, deductions, and TDS details on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  • The government verifies and processes the returns.
