Fake Income Tax Email Circulating Online; Citizens Urged to Stay Alert
Some scammers are sending emails in the name of the Income Tax Department that are currently being circulated online, raising concerns among taxpayers. The message says that several compliance gaps have been found in recent tax return filings and asks recipients to provide additional information through a link.
The email looks genuine. It uses subject lines like ‘Urgent Notice: Non-Compliance Identified in Regulatory Review‘ and warns that not replying within a given time could lead to penalties or regulatory action. Sometimes, the email also asks people to log in to a website that looks like the Income Tax portal or download an app to finish the process.
As per a post shared by PIB Fact Check on Platform X, this email is not real. It’s a scam made to trick people into giving their personal details like passwords or bank information. Officials said the Income Tax Department didn’t send any such email. So if you get a message like this, don’t click on any links or download anything. Those links can lead to fake websites that steal your information. This is a request for everyone; kindly ignore the email and check only through official sources.
