The CBDT has introduced the Income-tax (Sixth Amendment) Rules, 2026, effective March 31, 2026, bringing key revisions to the ITR forms for AY 2026-27.

CBDT Notifies ITR Forms for AY 2026-27 [Read Notification]
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue) has issued a notification dated March 30, 2026, announcing new rules called the Income-tax (Sixth Amendment) Rules, 2026. These rules are scheduled to take effect from today, March 31, 2026.
Under the said rules, the government has introduced significant amendments to Income Tax Forms: ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7, effective from the Assessment Year 2026-27. These new forms will replace their earlier versions.
The said amendments have been made in exercise of the powers granted under section 139 read with section 295 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (43 of 1961). The amended income tax forms have been attached to the notification PDF below. The revised forms will further amend the Income Tax Rules 1962.
Income Tax Return (ITR) Form-1 (Sahaj):
This form applies to resident individuals who have a total income upto Rs 50 lakhs (≤ Rs 50 lakh). This income includes sources such as salary or pension; income generated from one house property (Not including situations where you’re carrying forward a loss from previous years); income generated from other sources (like interest earned from savings accounts and fixed deposits); and agricultural income upto Rs. 5000.
The form does not apply to individuals having capital gains, business income, or multiple house properties.
Income Tax Return (ITR) Form-2:
The ITR-2 is for Individuals or those belonging to Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and these individuals are not eligible to file ITR-1 (Sahaj).
Income Tax Return (ITR) Form-3:
This form is for individuals and HUFs who run a business or profession and keep detailed accounts, like doctors, lawyers, or chartered accountants, whose income is based on actual profits.
Income Tax Return (ITR) Form-4:
This form is for resident individuals, HUFs, or firms (not LLPs) with income up to Rs 50 lakh from a business or profession using a simple calculation method (under sections 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE), along with salary, one house property, small agricultural income (up to Rs 5,000), and other sources.
Income Tax Return (ITR) Form-5:
This form is for firms, LLPs, associations (AOP), groups of people (BOI), or certain legal entities (AJPs) to file their tax returns.
Income Tax Return (ITR) Form-6:
This form is mandatory to be furnished by all companies registered under the Companies Act 2013 or 1956. The form is filed electronically at the Income Tax e-filing portal to report detailed financial figures, including profit and loss, balance sheets, and tax liability.
This form is not for Individuals, HUFs, Firms, LLPs, or companies claiming tax exemptions under Section 11 (charitable/religious trusts) of the Income Tax Act.
Income Tax Return (ITR) Form-7:
The form is furnished by Trusts, Charitable/Religious Institutions, Scientific Research Associations, Universities, News Agencies, and Political Parties that receive income from properties held for charitable or religious purposes or fall under sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C), or 139(4D).
The form can be filed online at the Income Tax e-filing portal using a digital signature certificate or electronic verification.
