Are credit rewards, cashback, and Air miles taxable in India?

With the ITR filing season for FY 2026 just around the corner, many people are wondering about the whole credit card rewards, cashback, and air miles situation: are they taxable? It’s a common question! These benefits are really popular, but, honestly, the specifics in the Income-tax Act can feel a bit murky. It’s less about strict rules.

So, here’s the deal: credit card rewards, like cashback, reward points, and air miles, are usually seen as discounts or rebates tied to how much you spend, rather than actual income. They help bring down the cost of what you buy instead of being extra money in your pocket, so most of the time, they aren’t taxed. But let’s not forget, things can shift if those rewards turn into cash. If you cash them out, get vouchers, or they come from your job or business, then yeah, they might just be taxable income.

And here’s another thing: there’s no set amount in tax law that says when you have to pay tax on these rewards. But if those benefits start looking like “gifts” over Rs 50,000 or seem way out of line with what you’ve declared as income, the taxman might take a closer look under “Income from Other Sources” or the unexplained income rules. High-value redemptions, like fancy trips or hotel stays? They usually aren’t taxed, as long as they stem from personal spending and aren’t cash-like.

Generally speaking, you don’t have to report regular rewards and cashback on your ITR. But it might be smart to mention them if they’re substantial, turned into cash, or tied to business expenses, especially since tax authorities are digging deeper into data these days.
