Delhi Government Introduces provisions for Cancellation of Society Registrations [Read Notification]
The Government of Delhi has launched a new law called the “Societies Registration (Delhi Amendment) Act, 2026”, which gives the Registrar the authority to cancel the registration of societies under some circumstances. The amendment was approved by the Lt Governor on April 23, 2026.
The new law was passed by the Delhi Legislative Assembly. It replaces the old Societies Registration Act, 1860.
A new section, called Section 12D, has been added to the law. This section gives the Registrar the power to cancel a society’s registration in certain cases.
The Registrar must give the society a fair opportunity to respond before cancelling a registration.
If a society disagrees with the decision, it can file an appeal within one month. The appeal must be made to the Commissioner of the Division where the society’s headquarters is located.
