Big Changes in UPI from August 1
Major changes are going to take place from August 1, 2025 to how people use their UPI (Unified Payments Interface). These updates will affect users of many popular apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. These new rules are being introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to make UPI faster, safer and more stable. These steps are being introduced to decrease the system overload and avoid technical problems like server outages, which were reported in recent months.
One important change is the limit on checking account balances. Users will be able to check their balance only 50 times per day per UPI app from now on. This rule is introduced to stop the unwanted system usage caused by frequent checks. Also, users can now view the list of bank accounts linked to their mobile number only 25 times in a day. These limits help in decreasing the pressure on the UPI system.
Another change made is related to automatic payments. Subscription-based payments like those for Netflix, SIPs and other services will be now processed only during non-peak hours. These time slots are before 10 AM between 1 PM to 5 PM and after 9:30 PM. This rule will avoid the high traffic during the busy hours.
Users will be allowed to check there payment status only three times if it is stuck. Also, there should be at least a gap of 90 seconds between each status check. This step is introduced to reduce the repeated system requests which slow down the overall performance.
NPCI reduced the time limit for UPI responses to make the system faster in June 2025. Request-pay and response-pay actions are now get completed within 15 seconds while the status checks and failed transaction reversals are handled in just 10 seconds. This resulted in improved speed of transactions and helps users to get faster solutions.
Also, before sending the money through UPI, the user can see the actual bank registered name of the person receiving the money from June 30, 2025. This helps to reduce mistakes and fraud. In December 2024, a limit was introduced for chargebacks. Now, a user can raise chargeback requests only 10 times in 30 days and only 5 times with the same person or institution.
UPI now handles over 16 billion transactions every month. Many users faced issues due to system outages and delays in April and May 2025. The main reason was repeated balance checks and status refreshes, which increased pressure on the servers.
Users should keep the daily limits in mind while checking balances or transaction status. Also, users should plan the auto-pay transactions during the allowed time slots. It’s necessary to always check the name before sending money and avoid overusing charge-backs.
