Surat Police Bust Rs 40 Lakh WhatsApp Scam

The Cybercrime Police of Surat city have arrested a 26-year-old man from Haryana for his alleged role in a Rs 40 lakh ‘Boss Scam’. In this type of fraud, scammers pretend to be a company owner on WhatsApp and trick an employee into transferring money from the company’s bank account.
The accused, Naveen Jaat, is a resident of Gorakhpur village in Haryana’s Fatehabad district. Police arrested him after a technical investigation into the case.
DCP (Cybercrime) Bishakha Jain said the complainant received a ZIP file containing a harmful electronic script through WhatsApp from an unknown mobile number. The fraudster later created a fake WhatsApp profile using the complainant’s photograph and contacted the company’s accounts department, pretending to be its owner. After asking about the company’s bank balance, the fraudster allegedly convinced the accountant to transfer Rs 40 lakh from the company’s IndusInd Bank account.
During the investigation, police found that Jaat allegedly arranged bank accounts for use in cybercrime. He had reportedly lured another accused, 21-year-old Amit Subhash, with the promise of sending him to Dubai and opened firms in his name. Bank accounts were then opened in the names of these firms and allegedly used to transfer money obtained through cyber fraud.
According to police, Jaat allegedly obtained three bank accounts by paying a commission of Rs 5,000. He later handed the accounts over to an absconding accused in exchange for a commission of Rs 40,000. Investigators also found that transactions worth Rs 53.06 lakh took place through the IndusInd Bank current account linked to the case between April 8 and May 24, 2026.
Police said Rs 18.5 lakh has been returned to the complainant so far. During the investigation, officers also found details of seven bank accounts from different banks on Jaat’s mobile phone. A check through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal revealed that one of these accounts was linked to another ‘Boss Scam’ case in Maharashtra, involving an alleged fraud of Rs 87.6 lakh.
