From Rs. 275 Crore to Zero: United Breweries Gets Relief in Sales Tax Dispute

United Breweries Limited (UBL) had a long‑running tax dispute with the Maharashtra Sales Tax Department. Originally, in 2023, the department demanded Rs. 275 crores for the year 2018‑19 under the Central Sales Tax Act. UBL appealed, and in 2024, the first appellate authority reduced this demand to Rs. 7 crores.

The company then took the matter further to the Maharashtra Sales Tax Tribunal, which, on May 11, 2026, gave a final favourable order, reducing the demand to zero. This means UBL no longer has to pay anything, and its contingent liability has been eliminated, with no penalties or compensation involved.
