The Income Tax Department has planned to hire 50 young law and chartered accounting graduates on a temporary basis to help and assist departmental staff in preparing legal cases to be heard by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).

This is the fresh initiative proposed by the central government to engage such professionals. Candidates under the age of 35 will be hired at various field offices of the department at a monthly pay of Rs 40,000 as part of a recently announced ‘young professional scheme, 2023’.

The income tax department is making its first attempt to entice young people to pursue professions in law and accounting.

According to a policy paper released by the IT department, the initiative is being implemented to “enhance departmental representation in the ITAT and envisions engagement of young graduates in law and accountancy who are rich in domain knowledge.”

ITAT now has 63 benches spread across 27 states that are responsible for adjudicating appeals. If a party is unsatisfied with the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals)’s judgements, they can file an appeal with the ITAT, which acts as the second appellate tribunal.

This programme intends to provide new job opportunities for young professionals specialising in law and accounting. It is also intended to reduce the workload of departmental representatives.

The selected professionals will be responsible for conducting research and drafting background work connected to the relevant appeals, similar to how they would practise in litigation under the supervision of a Senior Advocate.

Application notification will be available on August 25. The proposal proposes 12 professionals to be stationed in Mumbai, 9 in Delhi, and 5 in Gujarat. The number of professionals assigned to these locations will be decided by the amount of cases heard in the relevant tribunal benches.

Interested professionals are instruct to wait until August 25 to submit their applications.
