No Last-Minute Relief? Why Taxpayers Shouldn't Expect an ITR Deadline Extension For AY 2026-27
Every year a lot of taxpayers wait for the last few days to file their Income Tax Returns (ITR). Others expect the government to extend the filing deadline at the 11th hour. Such expectations have been rewarded in the past too as the Income Tax Department has announced deadline extensions on several occasions.
Last year, for example, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) first extended the ITR filing deadline from July 31 to September 15, 2025. Later, the due date was extended by one more day after taxpayers faced technical issues on the income tax e-filing portal on the final day.
However, the chances of a similar extension for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 appear quite low this time. There are at least three major reasons why taxpayers should not expect any relaxation in the current deadline.
Since ITR-1 to ITR-4 are used by most taxpayers and their filing utilities are already available, taxpayers who use these forms should not expect any further extension of the tax filing deadline.
Reason 1: The ITR filing deadline has already been extended for many taxpayers
For Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, the Income Tax Department has given extra time to many taxpayers who normally had to file their Income Tax Return (ITR) by July 31. These taxpayers can now file their returns until August 31. The extended deadline applies to:- People earning income from a business or profession whose accounts do not need an audit and who are not covered under Section 92E of the Income Tax Act.
- Partners in firms whose accounts do not need an audit, and their spouses (where Section 5A applies), provided they are not covered under Section 92E.
- Salaried employees
- Stock market traders
- Investors
Reason 2: ITR Forms and Filing Utilities Released Early
This year, the Income Tax Department released most ITR forms and filing utilities well in advance. As of June 22, 2026, the online and Excel utilities for ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, and ITR-4 are available.| ITR form | Online utility | Excel utility |
| ITR-1 | Yes | Yes |
| ITR-2 | Yes | Yes |
| ITR-3 | Yes | Yes |
| ITR-4 | Yes | Yes |
| ITR-5 | NA | NA |
| ITR-6 | NA | NA |
| ITR-7 | NA | NA |
Reason 3: Fewer chances of glitches this year
Last year, the income tax e-filing portal faced several technical issues, which led to an extension of the tax filing deadline. This happened mainly because many changes were introduced in the Union Budget 2024. This year, no major changes have been announced, giving the tax department enough time to prepare the system. As a result, taxpayers are expected to have a smoother and hassle-free filing experience. What Should Taxpayers Do Now?
Taxpayers should start preparing their returns now and not wait for a possible extension. Collect all documents, verify income details, check Form 26AS and AIS and file return well before due date. Filing early helps avoid the last-minute filing stress and reduces the risk of portal congestion, errors and penalties. Taxpayers hoping for an extension could find themselves in a bind if no announcement is made. Tax experts say there is no clear indication this year of an extension and taxpayers should treat the existing due date as final and complete their ITR filing at the earliest.About Author
