Income Tax Notice Leaves Family Shocked

Shocking! Homemaker Receives Rs 3.74 Crore GST Turnover Notice, But She Never Started a Business
A user on platform 'X' (formerly known as Twitter) shared a really strange case of his wife's. He stated that his wife has been a homemaker for the last 15 years, and she believes in living a simple and spiritual life. She had some basic investments in Fixed Deposits (FDs) and Bonds, nothing else. In her childhood, she had a dream to do business, but she could never do so. Every year, she used to file her income tax return using ITR-1. Her income is so small that it rarely reaches a taxable limit.
Money and financial ambitions have never been a priority for her. Recently, the Income Tax Department has sent her an unexpected notice stating she has made a GST turnover transaction of Rs 3.74 crore, pertaining to the Financial Year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27).
According to the sent notice, the Income Tax Authorities had received certain information regarding the financial transactions linked to her PAN for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), and her advance tax payments do not appear to match those transactions. The notice has been sent under its Advance Tax e-Campaign.
The department’s records show business-related figures in her name that are far beyond anything she has ever done. These include reported business receipts of Rs 1.75 crore, GST purchases of Rs 2.79 crore, and a GST turnover of Rs 3.74 crore. In addition, the communication mentions a receipt of Rs 2.65 lakh by partners from a partnership firm.
The news was completely shocking for them since the user disclosed that although his wife had a dream to run a business, she could never complete her dream, and her financial life had always been limited to small savings and basic investments.
Ironically, it appears that the system has now recorded her as running a multi-crore enterprise, something that exists only on paper, not in reality. The situation highlights how unexpected financial notices can sometimes leave ordinary taxpayers confused and searching for answers.
My wife has been a home maker for last 15 years. She has some basic investments in FDs and Bonds and that is all about it. Every year, she files ITR-1 and hardly comes within the taxable bracket. Money is the least in her mind. She is happy with her spiritual life. Suddenly,… pic.twitter.com/gvYFkXK42V
