New Aadhaar Card Coming This December: A Major Step Toward Privacy Protection

In an effort to boost the security and privacy of Indian Citizens, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is introducing a new Aadhaar Card design starting this December. This is the biggest privacy reform in the Aadhaar Card.

What’s New?

Currently, your Aadhaar card shows your name, address, date of birth, gender and Aadhaar number. Anyone taking the photocopy can see this information. However, the new Aadhaar will not show your personal details on the card. There will be a QR code, which will have all the information, including your name, Aadhaar Number, Date of Birth, Address, Gender, and Biometric verification data. The information will be encrypted.

The QR code can only be decoded by the UIDAI official apps, Government-authorised scanners and verification devices. The data will be confirmed through a single QR code scan.

Why this Change?

The change introduced by UIDAI is necessary to:

  • Protect your privacy: Nowadays, people get asked for Aadhaar Card photocopies at many places, including hotels, event organisers and officers. This creates a huge risk of personal data being leaked or misused. The new design will make sure that your details are not visible to unauthorised persons and are only verified through the official channels.
  • Reduce fraud: Many fraudsters use photocopies of Aadhaar to create fake identities. As the new card will not show anything, the risks of Identity theft, cloning, and fake Aadhaar misuse will reduce.
  • Support the Digital India Standards: The UIDAI wants Aadhaar to meet world-class security standards. This new Aadhar uses an encrypted QR code, making the system safe and clean.

When Will the New Aadhaar be Released?

The new Aadhaar card is set to be released from December 2025. It will be distributed across the country in different phases. Your old Aadhaar Card will continue to remain valid. However, it is possible to recommend switching to the updated Aadhaar for better security and privacy.
