CBDT Extends Due Date for Filing ITR for FY 2024-25 There is great news for all individuals whose income is taxable or above the basic exemption limit: the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26).
Calls Grow Louder for ITR Deadline Extension Amid Floods, Portal Glitches
This is the second time the government has extended the due date for ITR filing. Initially, the deadline was extended from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, and now the deadline has been further extended to September 16, 2025. However, for TAR (Tax Audit Report), till now is not extended. This financial year taxpayers had faced several challenges in filing their Income Tax Return (ITR) and Tax Audit Report (TAR), like glitches in the income tax portal, late availability of ITR utilities and forms, mismatches in Form 26AS and AIS, the changed format of reporting for non-corporate by ICAI, heavy rain and floods in several parts of the country, the festival season, overlap with other compliances, etc.

Additionally, numerous taxpayers, professionals, businesses, and tax associations had tried approaching the finance minister and Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) via distinct social media handles and urged the government to extend the due date for ITR and TAR filing for the financial year 2024-25, citing issues faced in the compliance process. Keeping all these approaches and issues in mind, the government has extended the due date for Income Tax Return (ITR) and Tax Audit Report (TAR) filing for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). Now, taxpayers no longer need to worry about the consequences of missing the ITR due date; now they have an extended time to file their returns without tension and any penalty fees.
