GSTN Revamps E-Way Bill System: Mandatory Ship-To GSTIN and New EWB Closure Facility Introduced
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has proposed certain functional enhancements in the E-Way Bill (EWB) portal. These enhancements include obligatory capture of “Ship-To GSTIN” in Bill-To Ship-To transactions for enhanced traceability and data accuracy, and a new facility of "e-Way Bill Closure" has been developed in the system, permitting taxpayers to voluntarily close the E-Way Bills once delivery of goods is completed.
The e-Way Bill may be closed by the supplier; recipient; transporter involved in the transaction; and the driver or authorised person whose mobile number has been provided for closure.
All the introduced enhancements have been covered by the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) in its advisory dated May 20, 2026, titled "Advisory to Taxpayers and Stakeholders – Enhancements in the e-Way Bill (EWB) Portal".
The action aims to reinforce the data quality and traceability, enable system-driven closure of transactions, and improve operational efficiency in the EWD system. All the taxpayers, transporters, ERP/API integrators, and other stakeholders are recommended to go through the changes mentioned in the GSTN advisory below.
Refer to the official advisory for complete information.
