DRI Busts Massive Gold Smuggling Racket, Seizes 29 Kg Gold Worth Rs 40 Crore
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted raids in several locations including Delhi and Agartala and exposed a massive gold smuggling racket. This illegal network was operating across borders and was connected to Dubai and Bangladesh.
During the investigation officials seized around 29 kilograms of foreign gold along with cash worth Rs 2.90 crore. Authorities also caught an important member of a smuggling group at a local courier warehouse while he was receiving two packages sent from Agartala, Tripura on January 6, 2026. When these packages were checked, officials found 15 kg of foreign-made gold with international refinery marks, worth about Rs 20.73 crore. At the same time, raids were carried out at several places in Delhi and Agartala, where another 14.2 kg of foreign-origin gold and around Rs 2.90 crore in cash were recovered. The cash included both Indian and Bangladeshi currency.
Authorities have seized about 29.2 kg of gold, worth around Rs 40 crore, along with Rs 2.9 crore in cash under the Customs Act. Additionally, four people involved in the smuggling group have been arrested in connection with the case.
After investigation it was found that the syndicate was smuggling gold into India via the Indo-Bangladesh border with Tripura and subsequently transporting it to Delhi through domestic cargo services with the active connivance of handlers based in Dubai and Bangladesh and local operatives running jewellery shops in Agartala.
By stopping illegal gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) helps protect India’s economy and government revenue. The authorities are still investigating the case to uncover more details and identify everyone involved.
