ICAI Seeks Public Clarification After Media Mislabels Tax Scam Accused as CA
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) issued a letter to Mr. Vijay Phansikar, editor of The Hitavada, on December 09, 2025 regarding clarification of News Item.
ICAI added in the letter that it has noticed a news item published in The Hitavada, dated November 13, 2025, with the headline ‘Buldhana tax scam: CA Vishnu Mule accused of filing fake returns for 1,633 cops.’
It is reported in the news item that “The Income Tax Department had accused CA Vishnu Mule from the Buldhana district of Vidarbha of filing fake returns for 1,633 police personnel using manipulated deductions and fabricated data. The Department issued a mass notice on October 23 after detecting that all returns had been filed through a single computer system operated by the accused, allegedly using one login and password. The investigation has now expanded, with other accountants and institutions also coming under scrutiny for their possible role in the scheme.”
ICAI clarified that Vishnu Mule, who has been shown as an accused in the news, is not a chartered accountant, and the news report was incorrect in stating so.
ICAI also mentioned that the facts were not verified with them before publishing the news. They have requested that a clarification be published to clearly state that the accused is not a chartered accountant.
ICAI further advised that, in the future, facts related to chartered accountants should be verified with them before publishing any news items.
