ITR Deadline Not Extended: Income Tax Dept Busts Fake News

The Income Tax Department denied social media claims encouraging that the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) has been further extended from September 15, 2025 to September 30, 2025.

The misleading message, circulating rapidly on WhatsApp and social media, claims that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the filing deadline for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 to September 30, 2025.

On the same, the Income tax department confirmed that the due date remains unchanged, i.e., September 15, 2025.

The Income Tax Department posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) said, “A fake news is in circulation stating that the due date for filing ITRs, originally due on July 31, 2025, and extended to September 15, 2025 has further extended to September 30, 2025. The due date for filing ITRs remains September 15, 2025.”

Further, the Income Tax Department requests taxpayers to consider only the official sources of news or information, such as the verified social media platforms of the Income Tax Department or Official website/portal.

In case taxpayers require any help regarding the ITR filing or tax payment, then they can get help from the Income tax departments helpdesk which works 24×7 and assists taxpayers through various services, including live chats, calls, and WebEx sessions, as well as through X.

The Income Tax Department alerted taxpayers who are yet to file ITR to file before the deadline of September 15 to avoid delays, penalties and other consequences.

The September 15 due date applies to taxpayers who are not subject to tax audits, such as salaried individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and small businesses.
